How to install your T-molding?
Installing your T-molding can quickly become a headache, especially around corners.
In this article, you'll find some tips for successfully installing your T-molding.
What is T-molding?
T-molding is a flexible T-shaped plastic strip that covers the edges of your arcade cabinet or bartop.
It has two purposes:
- The first is purely aesthetic; it adds a high-quality finish and enhances your cabinet or bartop.
- The second is simply to protect the edges of your wooden boards.
How to install T-molding on your arcade machine?
Step 1: The tools
To install your T-molding, you will need the following tools:
- A soft mallet
- A good cutter
- A cloth
- A heat gun or hair dryer
Step 2: Prepare the wood field and the T-molding.
To properly prepare for the installation of your T-molding, start by going around the groove on the edge of your arcade cabinet's wood to check that nothing will obstruct the installation.
Be careful not to enlarge the groove if you remove any wood dust stuck inside!
It's worth noting that a flexible T-molding is a guarantee of good quality, but don't panic if you received a rather stiff strip; there's a solution!
Heat the inside of the T-molding to soften it with a heat gun or hair dryer.
Step 3: Install the T-molding.
To install the T-molding on your arcade cabinet, start at the bottom of the cabinet. This will hide the cut at the beginning and end.
Place the T-molding in the groove and tap it with a soft mallet.
You can use a cloth if necessary to avoid damaging the T-molding.
Step 4: The angles.
The trickiest part of installing T-molding is the corners, but don't worry, it's not that complicated.
Equip yourself with a good cutter (be careful with your fingers) and cut the part that fits into the groove at the corner in a "V" shape.
Three or four cuts with your cutter are usually sufficient.
Be careful: excessive force can cause the molding to compress and stretch.
If you have any difficulty, run a hairdryer around the corner to soften it; it's a breeze.
Be careful not to overheat the visible side of the T-molding; remember that it's still plastic (plastic melts).
